DESIGN METHOD

Initial Consultation
The first step in my process of designing a garden is a site visit and consultation. This usually takes two to three hours (but depends on the size of the garden) during which time we discuss the project in outline, it gives us a chance to get to know one another and enables me to establish what the client wants the design to achieve. A letter summarising the meeting will follow, covering the scope of my work, and how I intend to charge for it.

Written Report/concept sketches (optional)
Following the initial consultation, either a written report or concept sketches can be provided (whichever is most appropriate).

Garden Layout Plan
Once the client decides to go ahead with my ideas, a plan is drawn up, which provides focus for client and designer and guidance for the hard landscapers, electricians, etc. This plan will show the proposed areas of hard landscaping, planting, paving, walls and steps, with suggestions for enhancing the scheme with pools or statuary where applicable. A site survey will be required (if one does not already exist) prior to the plan being drawn up; I can recommend a surveyor, or help to find one locally, the fee for this will be paid by the client direct to the surveyor.

Detailed Planting Plan (optional)
A detailed planting plan can be provided showing the names of the individual plants, quantities and costs.

Project Supervision
A hard landscaper will be recommended to carry out the work, who will provide a quotation for the work and who will charge the client direct; alternatively the client may decide to use his/her own builder. As the work progresses I will make site visits to oversee the hard landscapers to check the installation of paving, walls, trellis, etc.

Aftercare and Maintenance
I suggest a minimum of two visits a year for the first three years, to check how the garden and plants are becoming established and perhaps recommending bulbs, annuals or other additions.
